The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the renaming of the University of Abuja to Yakubu Gowon University, in honor of Nigeria’s former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon.
This decision was announced by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, following the FEC meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu. Idris stated that the renaming aims to recognize General Gowon’s contributions to Nigeria’s unity and development.
The minister noted that while the FEC has approved the renaming, the change will require formal approval from the National Assembly to take effect.
Established in 1988, the University of Abuja is a federal institution located in Nigeria’s capital, offering both conventional and distance learning programs. The university currently comprises multiple faculties, including Arts, Education, Engineering, Law, Management Sciences, Sciences, Social Sciences, and Veterinary Medicine.
